Ideas for Waste-Free Giving
What to do:
When it comes to gift giving, reduce waste by “thinking outside the gift box”!
*Reuse wrapping paper, ribbons, and gift bags.
*Use recycled paper or cloth as wrapping: Week 34.
*Instead of giving stuff, try giving experiences or gift cards.
*Make a donation to a charity in honor of a friend instead of gifting an item.
*Donate any unwanted gifts to charity.
Why it Helps the Earth:
The holiday season creates a surge of household waste. That's not just more crowding in the landfills; it also means more natural resources being used.
What the Research Says:
Some figures put the increase in waste during the holidays at as high as 25 percent. For a list of holiday waste statistics compiled from a variety of sources, you can visit Recycle Works.
Why it Helps You:
What you get from rethinking gifts is up to you: monetary savings, unique presents, tax write-offs, the joy of helping others, a return to simple traditions…. You choose!

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
Mahatma Gandi
"In Wilderness is the preservation of the world."
Henry David Thoreau, "Walking"
"Mine is a message of hope. If everybody could think a little bit about the small choices that they make every day:
What do you eat, does it result in animal cruelty? What do you wear, how was it made, does it damage the environment?
When people start thinking like that, they do change. They do make changes. And when more and more people think like that, we get critical mass."
Jane Goodall
