Idea of the Week: Use a Low Flow Showerhead

  What to do:

Install a low flow showerhead. Look for the gallons per minute, or "GPM" the showerhead uses. Low flow showerheads use around 1.5 to 3 GPM. (Old shower heads can use more than 8 GPM!)

  Why it Helps the Earth:

The reason for reducing water use seems evident—water is a limited natural resource, especially in certain climates. There's also another, less obvious, reason to save water: energy conservation! It takes electricity to purify and deliver the water that comes from our taps, as well as electricity to heat it, carry it away, and clean it after it becomes wastewater.

  What the Research Says:

According to the United States Geological Survey the average person uses about 80 to 100 gallons of water a day. Showers and baths are the second highest source of household water use, second only to toilet flushing.

For an overview of how water and energy use are connected, try reading the EPA's "Drops to Watts" brochure.

  Why it Helps You:

A low flow showerhead costs about $ 30, but by reducing your water use, it still saves you money. It's easy to do the math: check with your utility bill to see how much you pay per gallon of water. Also, some utility companies offer low flow showerheads at a discount, or even for free! Contact yours to see if they have any offers available.

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."

—Mahatma Gandi

"In Wilderness is the preservation of the world."

—Henry David Thoreau, "Walking"

"Mine is a message of hope. If everybody could think a little bit about the small choices that they make every day: What do you eat, does it result in animal cruelty? What do you wear, how was it made, does it damage the environment?

When people start thinking like that, they do change. They do make changes. And when more and more people think like that, we get critical mass."

—Jane Goodall
