Repair Instead of Replacing
What to do:
Think before you throw! Before throwing away broken items, check to see if there's a way they can be repaired. Some repairs are simple such as sewing and patching clothes, gluing cracked frames, etc. For more complicated repairs, look for a local repair shop.
Why it Helps the Earth:
Repairing instead of replacing results in a double benefit for the environment. On the one hand, there's no waste from the old item being thrown away. On the other hand, there are no resources needed to make a new one.
What the Research Says:
According to the EPA, the amount of waste the average person creates in one day has almost doubled over the last fifty years, reaching 4.5 pounds a day in
2008. For a straightforward primer on US waste statistics and a compelling list of reasons to try to avoid your garbage can,
Read the EPA's Reduce & Reuse .
Why it Helps You:
Because repairing saves you the price of a new one!

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."

"In Wilderness is the preservation of the world."
Henry David Thoreau, "Walking"
"Mine is a message of hope. If everybody could think a little bit about the small choices that they make every day:
What do you eat, does it result in animal cruelty? What do you wear, how was it made, does it damage the environment?
When people start thinking like that, they do change. They do make changes. And when more and more people think like that, we get critical mass."
