Water Lawns and Outdoor Plants in the Morning or Evening Only

  What to do:

Watering plants when it's warm and sunny out causes water to evaporate. Watering at dawn or dusk reduces evaporation and therefore conserves water. Also, try to water when there's no wind so that none of the water will blow away.

  Why it Helps the Earth:

The reason for reducing water use seems evident—water is a limited natural resource, especially in certain climates. There's also another, less obvious, reason to save water: energy conservation! It takes electricity to purify and deliver the water that comes from our taps.

  What the Research Says:

According to the United States Geological Survey the average person uses about 80 to 100 gallons of water a day. For an overview of how water and energy use are connected, try reading the EPA's "Drops to Watts" brochure. For more information about saving water both inside and outside your home, read How to Conserve Water and Use it Effectively .

  Why it Helps You:

Water can be expensive. Check with your utility bill to see how much you pay per gallon of water. The more you reduce your use, the more you save!

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."

—Mahatma Gandi

"In Wilderness is the preservation of the world."

—Henry David Thoreau, "Walking"

"Mine is a message of hope. If everybody could think a little bit about the small choices that they make every day: What do you eat, does it result in animal cruelty? What do you wear, how was it made, does it damage the environment?

When people start thinking like that, they do change. They do make changes. And when more and more people think like that, we get critical mass."

—Jane Goodall
